About us

James Bain Smith is a Fine Arts graduate of the Royal Academy Schools, London and has since pursued successful careers in both fine and decorative arts. His exceptional talents as a muralist and his unparalleled expertise in painting and restoration techniques make him one of the most sought after masters in this field. His work has been featured in the international press (including Elle Decoration, Architectural Digest): it can be seen first hand, by appointment, at the Castle Workshops showrooms.

Julia de Bierre is a graduate of Bristol University. (Theatre Studies and French)  A passion for interiors and antiques made her career choice an evidence; innate style and professional commitment have led to important and varied international commissions.  Since 1995 she has curated the Château de Lucens, one of Switzerland’s most magnificent Historical Monuments. She contributes to art and decorating magazines (including World of Interiors, International Auctioneers) and continues to collect furniture: usually French, and always in need of restoration.

Julia and James’s best selling book “Restoration Recipes” (pub. Quadrille ISBN 1-902757-03-3) is now into 2nd edition and has been translated into seven languages.

Their book on the architectural and decorative heritage of Malaysia will be published late 2006.
