Artist in Residence

"Providing the individual artist with time and space for the creative process."

A multi-disciplinary artist residency has been hosted by GalerieHuit since 2008 with the aim to provide a creative and inspirational environment for both established and emerging artists. Founded by writer/curator/heritage conservationist, Julia de Bierre, A.I.R. at GalerieHuit is a non-profit organisation and welcomes artists from all horizons and disciplines including: writers, photographers, journalists, composers, academics, archaeologists, heritage conservationists, actors and poets.

Galerie Huit is situated in the historic, pedestrian-friendly heart of Arles, in the PACA region (Provence Cote d'Azur) between Marseilles, Avignon and Montpellier, and borders the Camargue National park. The town of Arles has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981. With 2500 years of history, well-preserved Roman monuments including a Roman Amphitheatre and Arena, Renaissance palaces and religious edifices, 3 world-class museums and several international Arts Festivals throughout the year (Arles hosts the famous Rencontresd'Arles International Photography festival, as well as the European Festival of Nude Photography), it is no surprise that in 2009 Arles was voted the third Best Cultural Destination in France. Arles has been the inspiring setting for many artists, particularly the painter Vincent Van Gogh. There is now a dynamic local arts community.

Artists in Residence at Galerie Huit live and work within the thick stone walls of a prestigious, beautifully restored 17th century mansion. Exhibition spaces and convivial living quarters occupy the ground and lower floors. The upper floors comprise occasional seminar rooms, guest rooms and self-contained apartments for artist residencies. AIR at GalerieHuit provides a retreat from the distraction of everyday life and a valuable opportunity for artists to focus solely on their creative work.
