Galerie Huit Arles is situated in a late 17th century mansion, in the historical town centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Arles, France. Founded in 2007 by author, curator and heritage conservationist, Julia de Bierre, the gallery hosts exhibitions, artists, and guests from around the world.
Photographs, paintings, sculptures and "objets de désir" are displayed in the unusual salon settings of this atmospheric exhibition and residential space. As well as a regular exhibition programme, and distinguished private views, the gallery hosts residencies and workshops for artists and writers. Guest rooms or self-contained apartments are also available for rental in the mansion.
Galerie Huit Arles
Since 2007 the gallery has built a solid reputation for its careful selection of artists – both established and emerging – and the quality and originality of its hangings or installations. Exhibitions are mounted either independently or in collaboration. Partners have included: The Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Taschen Books, Editions Gallimard, City Hall Kuala Lumpur , Alliance Française and Galerie SIT DOWN, Paris.
More than just an art space, Galerie Huit Arles is a creative, inspirational and convivial venue in a magnificent setting.
Julia de Bierre
Author, curator and heritage-conservationist Julia de Bierre was born in Malaysia and was educated at Uplands School on Penang Hill and at Bristol University in the United Kingdom.
For many years she has lived and worked in 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites - the ancient Provençal town of Arles in France and multi-ethnic George Town on the island of Penang, Malaysia. This privilege has made her doubly aware of how important it is to preserve not just our urban and natural environments, but also a slower, more reflective way of life.

ABOUT STAYING AT GALERIE HUIT ARLES
"In the mid-90’s, when I was living and working in a medieval castle in Switzerland, weekends were spent just over the border in France, visiting vineyards and châteaux in Burgundy. If a château had guest rooms available, then that’s where I would stay, immersing myself in a gracious world where time seemed to have stopped still cum circa 1910. I loved the huge bedrooms with antique beds, the faded brocade curtains and the family portraits in their gilded frames. There were no televisions but plenty of good books, shared bathrooms down long corridors and the sense that this was a precious experience that went beyond a financial transaction for a comfortable bed. I’d like to feel that staying in the guest rooms or apartments at Galerie Huit Arles continues this tradition of authenticity (although we do provide wifi and ensuite bathrooms!). As company policy we maintain our resistance to advertising on huge internet booking sites and we continue to challenge the deadening hand of standardised travel. "
